Cape Coral has been ranked No. 5 on the list of the top places in Florida to live by a real estate blog in California.

The Sunshine State offers something for everyone, as we all know, from theme parks to beaches, water activities to auto racing.

Movoto Real Estate Blog released the rankings this week after judging 100 cities and towns in Florida on a number of unique criteria such as amenities, quality of life, crime rates, tax rates, unemployment and weather.

When all the tabulations were done, Coral Springs came out on top of the list ahead of Deerfield Beach, Winter Park and Pompano Beach. Cape Coral actually is tied for 5th on that list with Gainesville and Jupiter. Rounding out the top 10 places to live in Florida are Davie, Coconut Creek and Weston.

“I’m not surprised at all,” said Cape Coral Mayor Marni Sawicki. “Working from home, I could live anywhere in the U.S. and I chose Cape Coral. It truly is paradise.”

Fort Myers ranked No. 26 on the list.

“Seems like we’ve been inundated with lists recently,” said Chamber of Commerce of Cape Coral president Mike Quaintance. “But it’s a good thing. We use it as a marketing tool to gain a competitive advantage over other areas and it’s an affirmation of the other lists of places to start a business, raise a family or to buy a house.”

Cape Coral is the largest city listed in the top 10 and is known as a waterfront wonderland. Movoto took into account the Cape’s art festivals, July 4th celebration and Oktoberfest in considering great things the city offers. That’s in addition to the 400 miles of canals as its proximity to water that provides residents and visitors an abundance of seafood restaurants.

“I’ve been doing this for 25 years and have never been busier,” said Tracy Vanlandschoot of Cape Coral Association of Realtors. “People are coming here to buy a house. They are the Baby Boomers buying now while prices are still good and before they retire in a few years. We’ve been on so many lists lately that people see them and Google us.”

When it comes to the weather, the blog claims Cape Coral was No. 2 among all places considered.

“Financially, residents enjoy a low tax rate, a high quality of life, and the No. 16 crime rate with only 2,701 crimes per 100,000 people annually,” the website states.

While folks in Orlando, Tampa and Miami might find it odd that their cities are not in the top 10, only Tampa made it into the top 50 at No. 41.

As with all such lists, this one raises a few eyebrows even with critical comments posted on the Movoto website.

One critic wrote that, “Whoever made this list is not a Floridian.”

Another, “The fact Delray Beach is nowhere to be found on the list makes the entire list null and void.”

And,”There’s no beaches in the swamp of Weston and it’s much hotter than 82 degrees and tons of mosquitoes.”

Lastly, “How are Sunrise (22) and Plantation (75) ranked so differently in terms of weather? They are across the street from each other.”
